A more modern piece of Gold's work, I continually look at this piece and find interesting the title. It seems in conflict when you compare it to other artist pieces who would have included the light house, the boat or the secluded place in the name.
Here we have the Storm as our subject and it is refered to as 'Yon' and 'Old'. When you think of an oceanic storm it is easy to think of it as a short term event and then think of the boat or even the lighthouse as the long standing subjects worthy of 'Yon' or 'Old'. But as you try to follow the mind of the artist, without anthropormorphizing the storm, you understand what is in the depth of his soul. Seeing past fear and fluttering thoughts of personal property or even anything man made the artist instead chooses to focus on that which has been around for millions of years. It has come and gone, changed in intensity and altered the land over which it has passed but it is the 'Storm' which is 'Old' in this image and this artist nailed it right on the head.
It is rare to see this in modern art. Usually there are more eclectictic names that cannot be interpreted by more than one person at a time. But E. J. Gold has put the bulk of his work into the reach of the thinking person.
This is a thoughtful piece. You will enjoy the serenity and clarity this will bring to your collection.
It is difficult to try and nail down this style of Gold's. While it represents a form of Expressionism it also favors a taste of a throw back era of Fauvism. One thing is for sure, you can't just throw all of E. J. Gold's work into a single catagory and call it done. It is a body of work that is an evolution. And this is a very important transitional piece of that movement.
